    About Garth Brooks

Garth Brooks was born the youngest of six children on February 2, 1962, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His mother, Colleen Carroll, was a country singer who recorded several albums in the 1950's, and his father, Troyal Brooks, played guitar. Possibly due to his parents' musical influence, Garth Brooks became interested in music as a child and would often sing at family gatherings. However, it wasn't until he reached college that Brooks became seriously interested in music as a career.

By 1983, Garth Brooks began singing and playing guitar with lead guitarist Ty England in local clubs and bars, particularly the Tumbleweed in Stillwater, Oklahoma. In 1987, Garth Brooks and his wife, Sandy Mahl, moved to Nashville, where Brooks landed a recording contract with Capitol Records in 1988. Brooks' self-titled debut album was released on April 12, 1989, and achieved diamond certification. His next four studio albums, No Fences (1990), Ropin' the Wind (1991), The Chase (1992), and In Pieces (1993), were all wildly successful, attaining 17x platinum, 14x platinum, 9x platinum, and 8x platinum certifications, respectively.

Garth Brooks' career began to wane toward the late 1990's, when he unsuccessfully tried out for the San Diego Padres in 1998 and embarked on the failed Chris Gaines Project, which flopped in late 1999. Brooks also announced plans to divorce his wife, Sandy, in October of 2000, and officially announced his retirement from recording and performing two weeks later.

In 2005, Garth Brooks announced his marriage to Trisha Yearwood, and that same year, he issued The Limited Series, a six-CD box set that sold more than 500,000 copies on the issue date alone. In 2007, Brooks released a new boxed set called The Ultimate Hits that achieved 5x platinum certification. In January of 2008, Brooks performed five shows at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in order to benefit victims of the California wildfires.
